Reimagining the Rock Hall Experience

Overview

Research into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame visitor experience identified opportunities to improve navigation, artist discovery, storytelling and engagement. Working within the constraints of the existing museum, I developed a speculative redesign that combines spatial planning with interactive concepts to create a more connected and engaging experience.
The challenge: improve the visitor experience within the constraints of the existing museum, creating clearer paths through the space while making artists and their stories easier to discover and engage with.

The research:

On-site observation and visitor reviews revealed recurring issues with navigation, finding specific artists and artifacts, fragmented storytelling and limited interaction. The research also showed that visitors spent more time with video and interactive content than with lengthy exhibit text.

Reimagining the Exhibit Space

The existing layout was reconfigured to create a larger special exhibition space accessible from the lobby. The concept uses a multi-room Led Zeppelin special exhibit with interactive touch points to guide visitors through the band’s history.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

MyVinyl is a device visitors would use to personalize their experience at the Rock Hall, from finding the artists they came to see to interacting with exhibits and saving what they discover. The concept gives visitors a way to track their experience, discover more of the museum and return to continue where they left off.

Upon arriving at the museum, visitors select artists they want to see and use a multi-floor map to locate related exhibits and artifacts. MyVinyl records their selections and helps personalize their visit.

The special exhibit on Led Zeppelin features an interactive table where visitors can listen to music and explore the band’s influences. Place MyVinyl on the table, then drag records or select albums on the screen to discover more.

After leaving, visitors can register their device online to revisit music and photos, unlock content and track their progress through the museum.
